1” Polarized-Media Electronic Air Cleaners

ImageCombining ease of installation with low static pressure (for lower energy consumption and system wear), 1” Dynamic Air Cleaners are high-efficiency whole-house electronic air cleaners with an equivalency rating of MERV 13. As tiny sub-micron particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pass through the central heating and cooling system, they become polarized. The polarized particles get larger as they join together with other polarized particles and collect on a disposable low-static polarized media pad with an activated charcoal center screen. Dynamic

Air Cleaners remove difficult odors and provide an efficiency of 97% for particles down to .3 microns in size. 1” panels fit directly into existing filter racks or filter grilles and are powered using simple 24V wiring connected to the central HVAC system.

What’s MERV?

MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a number from 1 to 16 that is relative to air filter efficiency. The higher the MERV value, the more efficient the air filter is at removing particles. At the lower end of the efficiency spectrum a fiberglass panel filter may achieve MERV 4 or 5. At the higher end, filters that achieve MERV 13 or 14 are typically used in hospitals and clean rooms. High MERV filters are capable of removing higher quantities of extremely small contaminant (particles as small as 1/300 the diameter of a human hair). Higher MERV ratings can create problems with greater airflow resistance. This is also referred to as static pressure. With most filters the filter media becomes denser, and static pressure increase, as the filter efficiency increases. Increased static pressure forces the system fan motor to work harder as it pushes air through the filter. This also increases energy consumption. So for optimum performance, consumers should select the highest efficiency filter with the lowest static pressure.

What’s a micron?

Particle size is usually measured in microns, a metric unit of measure. A micron is 1/25,000 of an inch. There are over 20 million particles in the average cubic foot of indoor air.

Approximately 98% of all particles (by count) are in the size range of 5 microns or less. Visible particles represent only a small fraction of particles found in indoor air.

The Dynamic Advanced PCO System

ImageThe Dynamic Advanced PCO System destroys pollutants using ultraviolet light in a three-step process.  First, the pollutant adsorbs to the surface of the catalyst.  The pollutant and catalyst are then exposed to the photons of UV light.  The light energy activates the catalyst, which breaks down the pollutant into nontoxic products.  Odors and VOCs are vaporized by the UV light in much the same way that a drop of cold water is vaporized when it drops into a hot skillet.  Advantages of PCO include:

  • No Ozone
  • High destruction efficiencies at room temperatures
  • High oxidation yields for gas phase reactant and odors
  • Complete oxidation of organics to CO2 and H2O
  • Long service life with low maintenance requirements
  • Negligible pressure drop in duct system
  • Easy to install

The TiO2 PCO catalyst module is constructed using dual titanium dioxide metal catalyst screens that are pleated to provide additional surface area.  More surface area means higher efficiency. The screens are permanently mounted to a module that mounts directly to the HVAC system plenum or ductwork. A square 3” opening is required and a depth of at least 14” into the plenum.

The high output UV/PCO lamp slides into the PCO catalyst module between the dual catalyst screens and easily mounts to the catalyst module.  The 24V ballast is external to the unit to provide flexibility and ease of wiring.

How PCO works

Photo-catalytic oxidation (PCO) is an efficient means of eliminating airborne gas-phase contaminants.  PCO technology utilizes ultraviolet light to promote electrons from the valence band into the conduction band of a titanium dioxide semiconductor. Destruction of organic compounds takes place through reactions with molecular oxygen or through reactions with hydroxyl radicals and super-oxide ions.  Photo-catalysis does not require extreme temperatures to be effective, and the titanium dioxide material used in many PCO reactors can be incorporated into existing HVAC systems without adversely impacting the system static pressure.

The Dynamic Advanced PCO System consists of a high intensity UV-C ultraviolet lamp (254nm) and a Titanium Dioxide catalyst module. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the photo-catalyst becomes highly reactive and attacks the chemical bonds of VOCs and bio-aerosol pollutants, thereby reducing gaseous products and biological contaminants to carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor (H2O), and benign mineral acids.

RS-2 & RS-3 Integrated Air Purification Systems

ImageThe RS-2 air purification system includes two 1” Dynamic Air Cleaners in a V-Bank configuration to increase filter face area for more effective air cleaning at lower air velocity. Available cased in 1400 and 2400 cfm models, or uncased in a 2000 cfm model.

For homeowners that want the very purest air possible, the RS-3 includes two 1” Dynamic Air Cleaners in a cased V-Bank configuration with the addition of a Dynamic“Sterile Sweep®” UV-C system.

The Sterile Sweep features an oscillating germicidal lamp that kills pathogens collected by the Dynamic Air Cleaners. The RS-3 offers the most effective means of controlling all three elements of indoor air pollution---particulates, biological microbes, and gas-phase odors/VOCs. Available cased in 1400 and 2400 cfm models, or uncased in a 2000 cfm model.

What’s UV Light?

Short wavelength UV light exhibits more quantum properties than its visible and infrared counterparts. Ultraviolet light is broken down into three bands, according to its effects.

Image

UV-A is the least harmful and most commonly found type of UV light, because it has the least energy. UV-A light is often called black light, and is used for its relative harmlessness and its ability to cause fluorescent materials to emit visible light - thus appearing to glow in the dark. Most phototherapy and tanning booths use UV-A lamps.

UV-B is typically the most destructive form of UV light, because it has enough energy to damage biological tissues, yet not quite enough to be completely absorbed by the atmosphere. UV-B is known to cause skin cancer. Most extraterrestrial UV-B light rays are blocked by the earth’s atmosphere.

Short wavelength UV-C is almost completely absorbed in air within a few hundred meters. Ozone can be produced at certain ranges when UV-C photons collide with oxygen atoms. UV-C is almost never observed in nature, since it is absorbed so quickly. Germicidal UV-C lamps are often used to purify air and water, because of their ability to kill bacteria. Additional information on potential harmful effects of ozone is available on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website www.epa.gov.
