Smoke Demo Kit Operation

  1. Insert Demo media pad into the unit. Put lid onto base of unit and secure clamp.
  2. Use strong (high-tar) dry, cigarettes with filter tips for best results. (Best if not using a fresh pack of cigarettes. Cigarettes can be dried in a low oven for 1 - 2 hours and stored in an air-tight tin.)
  3. Insert cigarette into acrylic cigarette-holder on the lid of the plastic cover. After the cigarette has been firmly placed, light it by holding flame on exposed end of cigarette until the end is lit.
  4. Quickly place steel pipe with the red hand pump over cigarette and twist onto collar of cigarette holder. (Note: The cigarette will extinguish in 5 - 10 seconds if air is not pumped into the chamber immediately.)
  5. Pump smoke into the chamber. Do not overfill but use just enough smoke for a convincing demonstration. (Note: Excess smoke will escape through small hole below cigarette holder.)
  6. Switch on the fan (only) in the chamber and note that the smoke will not disappear with just the circulation of air through the non-energized fiberglass pad.
  7. With the fan continuing to operate, switch on the high-voltage electronics. (The red light on the air cleaner will come on.) The smoke in the chamber will disappear in 8 -15 seconds (depending on the humidity in the chamber). When the demonstration is over, switch off both the fan and the high-voltage electronics.

Important Notes for the Operation of the Smoke Demo Kit

  1. Make sure that the batteries in the unit are up to full strength (in total, there are 5 9-volt batteries: 2 batteries for the fan, 3 batteries for the high-voltage electronics). A simple test of the battery strength is to turn on the high-voltage electronics to the air cleaner and observe that red light. If the red light appears dim, the batteries are weak and should be replaced. To check the fan, turn it on and check if the fan speed is slow or fading. If so, the batteries should be replaced.
  2. The smoke chamber, although a realistic demonstration of the capabilities of the air cleaner, is an artificial environment. Because of the very small internal dimensions of the chamber, humidity from the air or from the product of combustion of a cigarette, can build up in the chamber to a point where super saturation of the media pads can occur (humidity of 100% or more), causing the demo to work very slowly.
  3. When showing several demonstrations back-to-back (within minutes of each other) rotate the media pads so that a fresh one is used. You can reuse these media pads once they dry out from the previous use. Eventually these media pads will need to be replaced after several usages each. This will be evident when the media pad being used works very slowly, which results in a poor demonstration.

Under these artificial conditions, the media pads may conduct electricity and the air cleaner will fail to operate or will operate with much reduced effectiveness. (In 'real life' circumstances, even in high humidity, normal airflow across the air cleaner will have a substantial drying effect and the air cleaner will not fail to operate. In the chamber of the Demo Unit humidity, can be trapped without the opportunity to evaporate.)

IT IS THEREFORE IMPERATIVE at all times, and ESPECIALLY IN CLIMATES WHERE HIGH AMBIENT HUMIDITY IS ENCOUNTERED, that precaution is taken to minimize the saturation of the air cleaner. THE MEDIA PADS IN THE AIR CLEANER SHOULD ALWAYS BE CHANGED AFTER EACH DEMONSTRATION, EVEN IN CONDITIONS OF RELATIVELY LOW HUMIDITY.

As stated above, after drying, the media pads can be reused if they still perform properly. Electroplated cigarette smoke will eventually plate the media pads enough that they can no longer be used.

If a problem appears with the Demo kit, always try a new, clean and dry media pad before deciding that the unit is defective.

Cleaning the Smoke Demo Kit

While the unit is off, use mild soap and water ONLY on the plastic lid. The air cleaner itself may be cleaned with a damp (not wet) cloth.
